I have been researching artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres. This piece he created is called “Untitled” (Portrait of Ross in L.A). This piece represents his partner Ross who died of AIDS. The candy piles are exactly 175 pounds, the weight a doctor told Ross was his ideal weight, when diagnosed with HIV. Viewers are encouraged to take a piece of candy with them to represent the destruction that HIV causes to the body. However at the end of each day the candy is removed and weighed and replaced at exactly 175 pounds, representing eternal life. The candy allows the audience to share Ross memory and I really like this idea. The piece has been recreated in many galleries, again signifying eternal life.
